Ikea Are Launching a Second-hand Marketplace in Australia

  • All Ages

Gone are the days of taking an entire day off work to assemble your Hemnes Chest of Drawers, Ikea is launching a second-hand furniture marketplace in Australia where you can browse and buy without having to assemble - where do we sign up?!

Ikea's Second-hand Marketplace

While it might not be as fun as stopping off at the Ikea food court mid-shop, Ikea's second-hand online marketplace is set to be a gamechanger for the Swedish furniture giant's push for a more sustainable future.

Billy Bookcase
The Billy Bookcase is the most popular Ikea product of all time.

The 'As Is' online platform is set to be piloted in early 2022 and will see Aussie shoppers browse all of their favourite second-hand Ikea furniture online before heading to their nearest store to collect it.

The Ikea 'As Is' marketplace is not exactly a new program. Some Ikea stores around the world have been selling used, ex-display, and discontinued stock for years in a reserved As Is section of stores (have you ever noticed these?), but Ikea's move to run their As Is marketplace online is a new concept for Australia and the world.

According to Ikea, "It’s basically an extension of our in-store circular hubs, which is something new for Ikea. The instore circular hubs and the online marketplace are a way to keep Ikea products in use for as long as possible, promoting systems of reuse and sharing in a circular economy."

Selling Your Unwanted Ikea Furniture

For those keen to join Ikea's push for a sustainable future and rid yourself of Ikea bits and bobs you no longer need, you can swap your unwanted Ikea furniture in-store. All you have to do is head to your nearest in-store hub (more are being rolled out nationally) and eligible Ikea second-hand goods can be returned for a refund card, which you can then use to shop for preloved products, returns, display items and discontinued goods. Sold!

When Will Ikea's Second-hand Marketplace Open?

According to Mellisa Hamilton, Ikea Australia’s Sustainability Manager, the company are aiming to have the marketplace ready early in 2022. It will initially be available only to members but will likely be opened up to everyone else later.
