ellaslist reviews Bitton Rose Bay - A Little Taste Of France

  • Family

I have long heard about the iconic Bitton restaurant in Alexandria that has reigned in the inner west for two decades. I also confess that I have never quite made it over there. So, I was excited to hear about their new eastern suburbs outpost and finally sink my teeth into this French favourite.

So Frenchy, So Chic

In the backstreets of Rose Bay, perched on the corner of Plumer Road, the newest Bitton venue has found its home in a gorgeous, original art deco building in this leafy village precinct. It's a perfect fit. It just belongs.

It’s 9 am on a cold, wet wintery Saturday. Nonetheless, Bitton Rose Bay is teeming with locals. There is a steady (socially-distanced) flow of take-away coffee devotees all morning, some taking their pick of the elegantly presented pastries and treats at the counter.

The restaurant itself, including the quaint outdoor courtyard, is buzzing with every type of diner. Amongst the content crowd is a family with a toddler and his balance bike and a baby in a pram; a couple having their leisurely weekend breaky; a man busily attending to his laptop, coffee in hand; two post-workout women catching up excitedly. It’s clearly a popular neighbourhood go-to.

We add ourselves to the mix and find a cosy nook to settle into for a hearty breakfast. The large windows filter plenty of natural light into the diner and overlook the lush green vista of the Rose Bay Golf Course across the road. The soothing sounds of French jazz overhead add to the ambience.

A Fine Way To Dine

The Petite Dejeuner menu is true to its heritage with a French Omelette, Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame, French Toast on Brioche and French Crêpes all on offer, among staple classics, a range of sides, and drinks that include fresh juices, smoothies and organic teas. It's early. I choose coffee. It hits the spot!

My 9-year-old easily opts for the Baby Bitton from the Menu Pout Enfants  - scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and toast - and a fresh pineapple juice. I, on the other hand, find it excruciatingly difficult to choose from the lust-worthy list. Finally, I give in to the Eggs Benedict - not something I would not normally order, but I’m swayed by the combination of bacon, eggs and spinach on potato rosti with a creamy hollandaise that I pray doesn’t overpower them all - and a side of mushrooms.

The meals came quickly, the servings were generous and my prayers were answered. Perfectly cooked and presented, with fresh ingredients bursting with flavour, this was the perfect winter weekend comfort food. My daughter's toast was even topped with a round of celebrated Pepe Saya artisan butter - another sure sign of the Bitton quality and know-how!

petite creme brulee

We devoured our plates and despite being completely full made light work of the petite creme brulees - a decadent finishing touch. Dessert for breakfast? This could become a thing! Plus, we could not leave without a roadie for my daughter - a bright red and green macaron that she had her eyes on all morning.

Local Love

The staff are friendly and attentive and the manager, Davide, greets everyone with genuine warmth and familiarity. When he asks his parting patrons how they enjoyed their meal, it is not uncommon for them to respond with a gushing retort like “it was delicious… as always”.

A French bistro has an innately posh ring to it. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. Yet the atmosphere is unmistakably down to earth. Davide says the philosophy of each Bitton restaurant is keeping the community happy, and he acknowledges the devoted locals for sustaining the fledgling restaurant during the COVID crisis. Bitton Rose Bay opened three months ago, just before the onset of the pandemic. It’s a testament to its values and reputation that it has thrived during this crazy time.

Bitton Rose Bay

The family-owned Bitton Rose Bay aims to offer a fine-dining experience that is family-friendly, and it effortlessly achieves both. Ultimately, this little piece of Paris is a gem.
