The Australian National Maritime Museum is making family outings calmer, more inclusive, and wonderfully engaging with its Sensory Friendly Days.
Tailored for autistic visitors and people with diverse abilities, these special sessions open the museum early in the morning or later in the afternoon for a quieter, more relaxed experience with the kids.
A Calmer Way to Explore: Sensory Friendly Days at the Australian National Maritime Museum
Sensory Friendly Days are coming to Sydney’s Australian National Maritime Museum this spring, bringing special sessions for autistic visitors and families with diverse abilities that make the museum calmer, quieter, and easier to navigate, so everyone can enjoy the treasures of the sea.
On selected dates, the Museum opens its doors early in the morning and later in the afternoon for Sensory Friendly Days, adjusts its galleries, activity areas, and vessels to create a welcoming, low-sensory environment for families who prefer a more peaceful visit, and avoids the crowds!
Trained staff and volunteers are always on hand to provide extra support, guide creative activities, and make sure families feel welcome every step of the way. It’s a beautiful way to explore at your own pace without the usual hustle and bustle.
Supporting Hidden Disabilities
The Maritime Museum proudly supports the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative. Visitors are encouraged to bring and wear their sunflower lanyard or collect one for free on arrival. Staff who are specially trained in supporting visitors with hidden disabilities will be wearing sunflower badges, making assistance easy to spot.
Maritime Museum Spring Exhibitions and Experiences
Families attending these spring sessions will enjoy access to the museum’s exhibitions and vessels, including:
- Wildlife Photographer of the Year – a breathtaking showcase of the natural world through award-winning images
- Ur Wayii – an exhibition weaving stories of Torres Strait Islander heritage.
- Frozen Witness – a striking exploration of Antarctica.
- Ultimate Depth: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea – an immersive journey into the mysteries of the deep ocean.
Plus, you’ll get to step aboard some of the museum’s most famous vessels, including the tall ship Duyfken and the destroyer HMAS Vampire (II), with modifications in place to support sensory needs. Activity areas are also adapted for a calmer play and learning experience.
