Great news for movie lovers and families in Sydney, our beloved IMAX is returning in 2023!

After a long and tumultuous journey, Sydney's beloved IMAX cinema is finally set to reopen after a seven-year wait. Despite facing obstacles like the pandemic and financial troubles in the construction industry, the cinema's renovation is now well advanced and the project director is confident that the rest of the process should go smoothly.

It's been a long wait, but IMAX fans can finally look forward to once again experiencing the magic of the giant-screen cinema.

The IMAX Returns To Darling Harbour In 2023

Ready for a reel thrill?


Entertainment. Ventures. Travel. (EVT) has been announced as the new operator of IMAX Sydney, set to be located within The Ribbon at Darling Harbour. The venue will feature an awe-inspiring 693m2 screen, delivering crystal clear, life-like images and precision audio for an incredible movie-going experience.

This state-of-the-art cinema will be the fourth IMAX operated by EVT internationally, joining IMAX Auckland, IMAX Queensgate (New Zealand), and IMAX Karlsruhe (Germany). The venue is set to open later this year, and it will feature EVT's signature 'Your Cinema, Your Way' seating, which gives movie-goers the choice to upgrade their experience with multiple seating options, from full recliners to private pods.

IMAX Sydney will integrate a groundbreaking 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom-designed lenses, and a suite of proprietary technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution and deeper contrast. This iconic venue will instantly join the ranks of IMAX's most celebrated and successful flagship cinemas around the world, including New York, Cannes, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Seoul, and London.
