It's the opening we've all been talking about for years! Sydney's west is about to get a serious cultural glow-up with the highly anticipated opening of Powerhouse Museum Parramatta.

The long-awaited Powerhouse Parramatta is nearly here, and if you thought this was just another museum, think again. This is a full-blown cultural playground set to transform Parramatta's riverfront and Sydney's cultural and educational offering.

What To Expect From the New Powerhouse Parramatta

First, let's get to what NOT to expect — your run-of-the-mill, wander-through-and-whisper type of museum! Spread across a massive 18,000 square metres, Powerhouse Museum Parramatta is designed to be immersive, interactive and seriously future-focused.

Next-gen exhibition spaces built for large-scale, hands-on experiences.

12,000 square metres of public space, including a riverside green square.

A layout that blends culture, science, design and community into one seamless hub.

Opening Date (And Why Everyone's Talking About It)

Powerhouse Parramatta is slated to open on 7 November 2026, and it's shaping up to be the biggest museum in NSW history.

Sitting right on the banks of the Parramatta River, this is the first major state cultural institution planted firmly in Sydney's west — and it's kind of a big deal!

Powerhouse Parramatta's Opening Exhibitions

Powerhouse Parramatta is preparing to open its doors with a seriously ambitious exhibition program, and families will have plenty to explore.

The first five exhibitions will bring together more than 3,000 objects, including over 1,600 pieces from the Powerhouse Collection alongside major loans from museums, institutions and collections around the world. From an immersive world created especially for kids to Moon rocks, Leonardo da Vinci drawings and even Steve Jobs' jeans, the opening line-up is certainly aiming high.

The Dark

Families with younger kids will want to put The Dark straight on their radar. Created specifically for children aged four to 12, this immersive exhibition turns something that can feel a little spooky into a wonderfully curious world waiting to be explored.

Developed with Kip Williams, Elizabeth Gadsby and Marg Horwell, The Dark moves through a bedroom, crystal tunnel and forest before opening into a mysterious land of giants. More than 800 objects will be woven through the experience, including minerals from the Australian Museum collection and newly commissioned First Nations animations.

There's a lovely Western Sydney connection too. Children from across the region have loaned their own treasured objects and shared stories about their encounters with the dark, making local kids part of the exhibition itself.

Es Devlin: The Turning

Internationally acclaimed British artist Es Devlin will make her Australian exhibition debut with The Turning, bringing five enormous immersive installations to Parramatta.

Visitors can wander through Forest of Us, a mirror maze drawing connections between the branching structures inside our lungs and trees in the natural world, before stepping into Memory Palace, a sprawling three-dimensional timeline exploring 75,000 years of human ideas and discoveries.

There's also Screenshare, featuring sketches Devlin has created over the past 35 years, detailed drawings of plants and animals in Redraw the Edges of Yourself, and Collective Portrait, where visitors can add to an evolving artwork by drawing the portrait of a stranger.

Overflow

Water takes centre stage in Overflow, a First Nations-led exhibition exploring the connection between communities and saltwater and freshwater Country across NSW.

Created with seven Aboriginal organisations, the exhibition looks at everything from caring for threatened species and managing floods to fishing, water monitoring, language revitalisation and cultural water rights.

The stories will unfold through a cinematic installation by acclaimed Kamilaroi filmmaker Ivan Sen, bringing together projects and perspectives from Aboriginal communities working to protect and care for waterways across the state.

Task Eternal

Got a budding astronaut, plane obsessive or sci-fi fan in the family? Task Eternal could be the exhibition that sends them straight into orbit.

One of the most ambitious aerospace exhibitions ever staged, it explores humanity's long-running determination to get off the ground and into the skies. Designed by Beijing-based OPEN Architecture and inspired by Ted Chiang's The Tower of Babylon, the exhibition brings together more than 850 objects.

Highlights include a historic Qantas Avro 504K aircraft, original Leonardo da Vinci drawings of flying machines on loan from Italy and a NASA Moon rock collected during the Apollo missions. Visitors will also encounter an extraordinary collection of suits from science, industry and pop culture, plus a new immersive light installation by American artist James Turrell.

The Mall

Finally, the humble shopping centre gets its moment in The Mall, although this is a long way from a quick dash to the food court.

Created with international architecture firm OMA/AMO, the exhibition explores how shopping malls have shaped architecture, fashion, technology and everyday culture in Australia and around the world.

Among the curiosities on display will be the Levi's 501 jeans worn by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, early designs for the barcode and the archive of shopping-centre pioneer Victor Gruen, shown publicly for the first time.

There will even be an autonomous ballet performed by warehouse robots and a contemporary recreation of the much-loved Roselands Raindrop Fountain, giving Sydney families a rather unexpected dose of shopping-centre nostalgia.

With thousands of objects and some genuinely huge international loans heading west, Powerhouse Parramatta's opening program looks set to give Sydney families plenty of reasons to keep coming back.

But Wait, There's More...

A Rooftop Worth The Hype

Head upstairs, and things get even more interesting. The rooftop terrace is set to deliver near-360-degree views across Parramatta, with a lush garden filled with Indigenous plants, a greenhouse, water features and spaces for workshops and events.

There's also Vitocco Kitchen, a 200-seat production kitchen designed for cooking classes, food experiences and hands-on learning. Through a partnership with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, thousands of NSW students will get stuck into growing, cooking and sustainability programs each year.

Oh — and because they've really gone all out — there's also an observatory with telescopes and a retractable roof, hosting astronomy sessions with scientists from around the world!

The Lang Walker Family Academy

If you've got curious kids (or just love a hands-on experience), this is where things get really interesting. The Lang Walker Family Academy will be a major draw in Powerhouse Parramatta, offering interactive programs on food, sustainability, and science.

In partnership with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, the academy will welcome more than 10,000 NSW students each year for immersive workshops covering everything from growing produce and cooking to environmental awareness, set against the backdrop of the rooftop garden and production kitchen.

It's designed to inspire the next generation while giving families a chance to experience something a little more meaningful than a standard museum visit.

The Holdmark Gallery

Art lovers, this one's for you. The Holdmark Gallery will be one of the major exhibition spaces inside the new Powerhouse Parramatta, designed to host large-scale, ever-changing showcases spanning art, design, science and culture.

There'll be bold, immersive exhibitions rather than anything too traditional — this is a space built for big ideas and visually striking experiences that pull you in (and keep the kids engaged, too). It'll be a key part of the museum's rotating program, meaning there'll always be something new to see, whether it's international touring exhibitions or locally curated works.

A Space For Curious Minds (Big and Small)

Powerhouse Parramatta is going all in on hands-on learning, with a purpose-built play and learning space dedicated to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths). Designed for kids, it's all about interactive discovery with tinkering, experimenting and getting stuck into ideas in a way that actually feels fun.

Beyond that, the museum will also house versatile event and function spaces, meaning everything from workshops and talks to large-scale events and community gatherings will be part of the mix.

Big On Sustainability

It's also big on sustainability. It'll be fully electric and powered by 100% renewable energy. Designed to be climate-positive, it'll target a 6 Star Green Star rating, a first for an Australian public building!
