Hyde Park Barracks: A Must-Do History Adventure for Kids and Families

A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site on Macquarie Street, Hyde Park Barracks is an extraordinary record of the living legacy of colonial Australia. Originally built to house convicts, the Barracks also served as a women’s immigration depot and asylum, and later law courts and government offices.

Today, this immersive museum tells the stories of the thousands of men, women and children held or housed there, and the Aboriginal communities profoundly impacted by the relentless push of colonial expansion. On display is evidence of the thousands of men and women who lived and worked through oral history, pictures, documents, artefacts, objects, soundscapes and the fabric and rooms of the building itself.

Hyde Park Barracks: A Must-Do History Adventure for Kids and Families

Right in the heart of Sydney's CBD, Hyde Park Barracks is one of Australia's most significant and genuinely fascinating museums - and the best part? It won't cost you a cent to get in. This beautifully preserved convict-era building brings over 200 years of history to life through cutting-edge immersive audio technology, hands-on kids' activities, and over 4,000 original artefacts.

What Is Hyde Park Barracks?

Originally opened in 1819 to house male convicts, Hyde Park Barracks has had many lives. It served as a women's immigration depot, an asylum, and later law courts and government offices before becoming the immersive museum it is today.

The Immersive Audio Experience

The museum is accessible via a self-guided audio tour, with sessions starting every half hour. Visitors are handed a headset and device, and as they move through the building, stories unfold around them. You will hear soundscapes, personal accounts and oral histories that make it feel less like a museum visit and more like stepping into another century.

The self-guided audio experience is recommended for visitors aged 8 and over, and each session runs for approximately 90 minutes.

Hyde Park Barracks Kids Trail

The Kids Trail is a tailored audio guide and activity trail designed specifically for children, with the stories of the Barracks told through the voices of convicts and immigrants who actually lived there.

Kids listen for clues, complete activities as they move through the museum, spot the rats hiding throughout the building, draw their own convict tattoo, and much more. It is genuinely interactive and genuinely fun — and yes, children can lie in a convict's hammock and try on leg irons. History has never been so hands-on.

The Kids Trail is suitable for children aged 5 to 12 years.
