How Cities Work exhibition – closing soon!

Be sure to visit the How Cities Work exhibition before it closes on 21 July! Explore the city inside and out, top to bottom in a whole new way! From sewers to skyscrapers, this new exhibition at the Museum of Sydney reveals the secret workings of the city. The exhibition brings to life the Lonely Planet Kids book How Cities Work, illustrated by James Gulliver Hancock.

Rouse Hill House & Farm in LEGO® Bricks

Marvel at the amazing models of the iconic Rouse Hill House and farm buildings constructed from LEGO® bricks with breathtaking architectural detail and accuracy by the Southern Hemisphere’s only LEGO®-certified professional and LEGO® Masters judge, Ryan McNaught (aka The Brickman). Then create your own LEGO farm to add to the display.

Convict Kids

Convict kids, come straight off the ship and get to work on the Macarthur estate. Mr Macarthur is returning from England and there’s much to be done before he arrives. The table needs to be set, clothes washed, the bed needs to be made and there are so many other jobs to do! Then try writing your name with a quill to receive your ticket of leave before relaxing with some games in the garden. Ages 5-12 years.

Earn Your Tucker

The sun is up and it’s time to have fun and muck in to get the chores done. Help feed the chickens, collect the eggs and learn how to do the ‘egg test’ to ensure your egg is fresh. Grind the grain and churn the butter, learning how to wash off the buttermilk and pat the butter into shape. When the work is done, enjoy your well-earned tucker! Includes bread, butter, honey, tea/coffee and flavoured milk.

Bush Tucker family workshop

Search for bush tucker plants with Aboriginal guides from Muru Mittigar around Rouse Hill House & Farm. Learn about traditional bush foods and make a johnnycake. Then sit down to your well-earned tucker!

Enjoy the following activities during this program:

  • Learn how to identify plants and any wildlife we can spot
  • Use traditional and contemporary ingredients to make a ‘Johnny cake’
  • Bake your cake, make sure there is enough to share

Playing Shop

Do you know how to wrap an egg, weigh out goods on a scale or count in pounds and shillings? With Playing Shop children become shopkeepers and get behind the counter of Susannah Place Museum’s re-created c1915 corner shop. Ages 5+
