Taiko isn’t just an awesome sounding musical instrument. Did you know that taiko drumming can help reduce stress, aid relaxation, as well as boost self-expression? This means that taking a class will not only improve your music skills but also increase your overall well-being. Did we mention that it’s also really fun?

Taiko playing requires great energy and teamwork – its expression is primal and earthy. Taiko playing is also great exercise. It is a musical activity that is challenging and fun, and offers wonderful benefits. like reducing stress, aiding relaxation and inviting personal expression.

The Australian Taiko Academy fosters a family-friendly environment and children of all ages are welcome to begin their musical journey with the academy.

Younger children will get to participate in musical games and learn short pieces of music. Older students concentrate more on exploring a variety of taiko playing styles, technique, complex rhythms and musical independence. Taiko is a great way to meet like-minded friends as well as get creative and active at the same time.

Taiko Classes/Workshops:

Taiko Tots: 3-5 years

The perfect introduction to music for little ones. Musical games and learning short pieces of music are an important part of the Taiko Tots experience.

Key areas of learning are;

  • Maintaining a beat.
  • Sequencing and pattern-making.
  • Developing aural memory, kinaesthetic awareness and physical coordination.
  • Working together with others.

Mini Beats: 6-10 years

Get creative and active at the same time! Musical games and learning short pieces of music are an important part of the Mini Beats experience.

Key areas of learning are;

  • Maintaining a beat.
  • Sequencing and pattern-making.
  • Developing aural memory, kinaesthetic awareness and physical coordination.
  • Working together with others.

Bachi Club: 11-14 years

Learn a unique musical instrument, meet like minded peers and get creative.

In Bachi Club, students focus on;

  • Integrating movement of the bachi drumsticks, arms and body.
  • Good sound production.
  • Developing a solid sense of rhythm.
  • Endurance.
  • Speed.
  • Breath control.

Key learning points are;

  • Studying a variety of traditional taiko styles.
  • Learning the accompanying kuchi shoga (taiko rhythm vocals).
  • Learning and practicing a musical composition.
  • Practicing pieces called renshu that involve specific musical and technical challenges.
  • Developing general musicianship.
  • Learning about aspects of Japanese culture and taiko history.

Tataku: 14-18 years

Fast paced and high energy – get ready to enter the exciting world of taiko! Devised especially for young adults, Tataku provides an opportunity to build new musical skills, develop fitness, and learn a range of exciting taiko styles and rhythms in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Ideal for beginners and experienced taiko players alike, all you need is energy, drive and a desire to engage with this highly physical and rewarding art form.

Bring a friend, meet new ones and round off the week with a big play on some big drums!

Family Play Taiko Workshops

Get the family together for Family Play Taiko. Bond in this unique experience and find joy in playing taiko together.

This workshop has been created so all members of your family (8+ years) can experience the joy of playing taiko together. Parents and children; grandparents and grandkids; aunties, uncles and nieces, nephews – everyone is welcome!

Family Play Taiko is a unique family experience that will energise, stimulate and excite. Taiko playing requires great energy and teamwork, as well as total integration of one’s mind, body and spirit; the rhythm of the taiko pulsates through your body – its expression is primal and earthy.

Where:   Level W4-0, 42-46 Wattle Street, Ultimo
When:    Classes commence from the 31st January and run for 9 weeks.
Cost:      $270 ($190 concession)

Taikoz is registered for Creative Kids and welcomes the use of the vouchers to contribute towards course fees.
