Surry Hills @Play

Surry Hills is renowned for its vibrant community and creative spirit, and a month-long festival celebrating the joy of play is sure to be a hit with locals and visitors alike. 

Surry Hills @Play offers a range of activities, from pop-up picnics to scavenger hunts where everyone is a winner, children's holiday workshops, creative bike tours with a difference, and a playful, artist led shopfront activation across 14 local businesses. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival will bring together over 100 local businesses, artists, residents, and community groups to celebrate Surry Hills' signature style and unique creative playground, kicking off on April 1st.

If that wasn't enough, the month will culminate in a Play Day at Shannon Reserve on Sunday, April 30th, where the kids take over! The event will feature yoga classes, dog exhibitions, fashion parades, dance workshops, local music group The Vegetable Plot, and the ultimate kids takeover – Surrytopia - where kids from all walks of life are invited to tell Surry Hills what they want out of their urban playgrounds and build their Surrytopia!

Scavenger Hunt

STOP THE PRESS! Six well-known Surry Hills dogs are on the loose, and we need YOUR help to find them! So put on your thinking caps, grab a map from Surry Hills Library, or download one from the website, and get sniffing. Prepare to look in some unexpected places, but there are plenty of clues, so you won’t lose the scent!

Once you catch each dog, write their names on your map, upload the form to the website, and you'll receive your well-earned prize via email.

Where:  Surry Hills Library, 405 Crown St, Surry Hills
When:   Hunt begins APRIL 1 so sharpen that sniffer and get ready for the hunt!
Cost:    It's free to participate, with prizes for all entrants until stock runs out.

Surrytopia - Zine Making Workshop

Surry Hills is about to be turned upside down! They're putting the kids in charge. What?!

Join them for a fun and free workshop where your kids will use a variety of materials and techniques to make their very own handmade book or zine, reimagining a Surry Hills where kids call the shots.

What will they do? Wear pyjamas to school? Eat ice cream for breakfast? Swap cars for skateboards?

Pop Up Picnics

On April 15th and 22nd, Surry Hills @Play will be setting up pop-up picnics with lawn games, workshops, tunes, and shady umbrellas starting from 10 am.

Pick up a scavenger hunt and return it to us to receive a prize or get creative and pimp out your bicycle using repurposed and recycled materials under the guidance of a local artist.

Look out for our bright pink festival marquee and join the fun!

Surry Stories Bike Tour

Surry Hills @Play offers a playful and fascinating bike tour of Surry Hills.

Whether you’re an experienced bike buff or are pushing the pedals after a long break, come and play!

Throughout April for an inclusive and creative excursion that will weave you through the arteries and capillaries of Surry Hills’ heart to uncover its stories of art, community, history, and culture.

Their bike captains will guide you on your bicycle journey, bringing to life the local characters and stories for a unique, immersive experience.

Before you push off, the best explorers need the best-looking gear, right? Meet at Collins St Parklet and grab some of our upcycled and repurposed decorations to pimp out your bike and helmet as you get ready for the unconventional ride of your life!

This is FREE but be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
