Lunar New Year Celebrations at Darling Harbour

  • Fri Feb 12 - Sun Feb 28 2021
  • All Ages
  • Some free and some paid events

Lunar New Year is upon us once again—and Darling Harbour is hosting some pretty epic events to celebrate the occasion. Here's what to look out for...

Family-Friendly Experiences

Step through the Lunar New Year Moon Gates at the Chinese Garden of Friendship forecourt, then wander through Darling Square to find the Lucky Lunar Lamp Posts. The 10m-high lamp posts will form a grouped feature in the square and light up simultaneously throughout the night, creating the sensation of movement and representing good fortune for the year ahead.

Over the Lunar New Year celebrations, visitors will have the chance to see Lion Dancers and drummers entertaining audiences around Cockle Bay. Spectators will also see the power and spirit of the dragon come to life when the popular Dragon Boat Races. For those looking to get hands-on with the entertainment, look no further than the Shadow Puppet Performances at the Water Pavilion.

The Chinese Garden of Friendship will also host a range of interactive workshops. These include lantern crafts; the creative pit stop for little ones, lessons in Calligraphy and Chinese Brush Painting, as well as the Hopes and Dreams Bookmarks Station—which will be available for the family to enjoy, with guests asked to write down their hopes and dreams for the year ahead and hang them from the garden lattice.
