Learn How To Play the Japanese Drum and Percussion Instruments at Australian Taiko Academy

Taikoz fosters a family-friendly environment and children of all ages are welcome to begin their taiko journey with us.

Weekly classes run for four 8-week terms (coinciding with school terms) and focus on playing rhythmic patterns, developing kinetic and aural awareness, and working together as a group.

Musical games and learning short pieces of music are an important part of the younger child’s experience, while the older students concentrate more on exploring a variety of taiko playing styles, technique, complex rhythms and musical independence.

Taiko Tots 3-5yrs

This class introduces children between the ages of 3 and 5 to music through taiko, rhythm and movement. Musical games and learning short pieces of music are an important part of the Taiko Tots experience. Key areas of learning are maintaining a beat Sequencing and pattern-making, developing aural memory, kinaesthetic awareness and physical coordination.

Mini Beats 6 - 10yrs

Introduction to music through taiko, rhythm and movement for 6 to 10 year olds. Musical games and learning short pieces of music are an important part of the Mini Beats experience. Key areas of learning are: maintaining a beat, sequencing and pattern-making, developing aural memory, kinaesthetic awareness and physical coordination

Bachi Club 11-14yrs

The curriculum runs over the course of four 8-week terms and focuses on learning a variety of taiko playing styles, technique, complex rhythms and musical independence. In Bachi Club, students focus on: integrating movement of the bachi drumsticks, arms and body, good sound production, developing a solid sense of rhythm, endurance, speed and breath control.

Tataku 14-18 yrs

Tataku provides an opportunity to build new musical skills, develop fitness, and learn a range of exciting taiko styles and rhythms in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Ideal for beginners and experienced taiko players alike, all you need is energy, drive and a desire to engage with this highly physical and rewarding art form.
