Celebrate 2044
Mark your calendar for Saturday, 13 June, because Sydenham Green is turning into the Inner West's most welcoming patch of grass from 11 am to 4 pm, and it's completely free.
Celebrate 2044 is a free, family-friendly community event for residents of the 2044 postcode, featuring a relaxed, picnic-style afternoon. Bring a rug, bring your dog, bring whoever you've been meaning to catch up with since winter started.
What's on at the Celebrate 2044 Festival?
The music lineup is genuinely good. The afternoon opens with Tempe High School's percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, roving band The Rovers, and a Year 12 showcase. Then things get properly funky with Zigi Blau playing an entirely improvised, live-looped acid jazz set, followed by Kate Wadey and The Finer Cuts, finishing with Karen Lee Andrews, whose soul and blues sound blends gospel fire, roots grit, and rock energy shaped by her Polynesian heritage.
For the kids, KongQuest Playkour has children racing the clock on parkour-style challenges, there's a paper planes craft station where kids design, fold, and race their own planes, and Lotte's Craft Station runs a hands-on fabric printing workshop using stencils and brushes. Perhaps the highlight of the roving entertainment: Clowns Lost at the Airport, a roving performance featuring mischievous clowns creating chaos and spontaneous comedy with the crowd. Chaotic, delightful, and very 2044.
The food situation is well sorted. Authentic Turkish gozleme cooked hot off the grill, handmade empanadas from Cholito, fresh Spanish paella from Ola Lola, and okonomiyaki with yakisoba noodles from Oyatsu. Plus, freshly squeezed lemonade from The Citrus Factory and specialty coffee, matcha, and handmade cookies from Cya Latte. You won't leave hungry!
A couple of neighbourhood bonuses: the NSW SES Marrickville Unit is opening its roller door on Railway Road so you can learn about local emergency work, and Stonevilla Studios — a short walk down Railway Lane — will have its working artist studios open for visitors.
Auslan interpreters will be on hand throughout the event, and a quiet, low-sensory room is available for anyone who needs a break from the crowd.
