Mike Hewson: The Key❜s Under the Mat at the Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Art Gallery of New South Wales has done it again, transforming its newest and most adventurous exhibition space, the Nelson Packer Tank, into something truly extraordinary.

From Saturday 4 October 2025, families are invited to step inside Mike Hewson: The Key’s Under the Mat – a free exhibition that blurs the lines between art, park, and playground.

Celebrated for his large-scale public artworks, Mike Hewson has reimagined this exciting new exhibition space, the Nelson Packer Tank at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, into a giant, hands-on wonderland and sculptural neighbourhood where kids and grown-ups are encouraged to climb, build, explore, and play.

Mike Hewson: The Key’s Under the Mat is an art park made from thousands of recycled materials, packed with colourful details, unexpected corners, and plenty of room to create your own adventure. It’s hands-on, interactive, and unlike anything else in Sydney.

Families are invited to dive right in and explore this life-size artwork. Children can scramble, perform, or simply wander through the space, while parents enjoy the creative energy that makes this installation so special.

It’s a welcoming, family-friendly environment designed to get everyone thinking about art in new ways.
