The Trumpet of the Swan

Bring your primary schooler to The Trumpet of the Swan, a live orchestra show about a swan, a boy and a stolen brass trumpet!

Opera Australia presents this stage version of E.B. White's novel at the Regent Theatre from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November 2026. Actors narrate the story while Orchestra Victoria plays the score live.

What to Expect at The Trumpet of the Swan

Orchestra Victoria and the swan from The Trumpet of the Swan at the Regent Theatre
Orchestra Victoria plays the score live while actors tell the story on the Regent Theatre stage.

Louis is a young swan born without a voice, and he sets out with a boy named Sam and a stolen brass trumpet to show that the quietest among us can make the loudest impact. E.B. White, who also wrote Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, wrote the novel behind the show, and Marsha Norman adapted it for the stage with music by Jason Robert Brown.

Opera Australia designed the show for young audiences aged 8 to 12 and their families. That makes it a good first concert for a primary schooler, because the musicians play live in the theatre and the story keeps moving around them. It runs for 80 minutes. There is no interval, so a toilet stop beforehand is smart!

Four sessions run across the weekend: Friday evening, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Friday finishes at 8.20 pm.
