Build a Tiny World at Pocket House, State Library Victoria
Looking for a free Melbourne school holiday activity that lets kids get properly creative? State Library Victoria invites little makers to dream small — very small — at Pocket House, a gorgeous hands-on craft experience all about the people, places, and things they treasure most.
Perfect for kids aged five to 12, Pocket House launches for the spring school holidays on 19 September 2026, and best of all, it's completely free with no bookings required!
Create a Little House With a Big Heart
Inspired by These Long-Loved Things by Australian musician and author Josh Pyke and illustrator Ronojoy Ghosh, Pocket House encourages kids to create their own miniature world.
Children can fold and fill a specially designed paper house with drawings of their favourite things — treasured toys, beloved people, special places and all those little details that make home feel like home. Once they're finished, their Pocket House becomes a sweet keepsake to take home.
It's part of State Library Victoria's Tales We Treasure spring kids' program, which celebrates stories, memories and the moments that shape us.
Drop in During the School Holidays
There's no need to lock in a session time. Pocket House runs as a free drop-in activity from 1-4 pm every day of the spring school holidays, from 19 September to 4 October 2026.
Can't make it during the holidays? The activity continues on weekends throughout Term 4, with sessions running from 3-5 pm from 10 October until 13 December 2026.
Parents and carers must stay with their children for the duration of the activity.
With no tickets to buy, no advance planning required and a lovely creation to take home afterwards, Pocket House is an easy addition to a Melbourne CBD family day out this spring.
