Waterfront Bliss: Why The Boathouse Fishing Point is the Perfect Family Friendly Accommodation
- All Ages
If you and the family are in need of a relaxing, family-friendly getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then take a look at The Boathouse at Fishing Point in the beautiful Lake Macquarie.
Just 1.5 hours north of Sydney, Fishing Point is a quiet and tranquil suburb of Lake Macquarie located on the western shore, on a peninsula south of Rathmines. Here's what you need to know.
The Boathouse - Amenities and Location
Walking in the front door of The Boathouse, our eyes lit up, it is just gorgeous! The house is light and bright with views of the Lake from almost every window. The decor of the house is relaxed coastal with beautiful furnishings that make it both stunning and homely.
There’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy together or have some time alone. The spacious lounge room has floor to ceiling windows to take in the beautiful and calming lake views, a gorgeous and comfy lounge as well as a kids area. The kid's area is a great space for the kids to play and chill with a table and chairs, bean bags, toys and books.
The kitchen and dining area is literally in the centre of the house and completely stocked with everything you need from plates to cups to pots and platters as well as all the food essentials such as salt and pepper, sauces, tea, coffee, sugar, flour etc. Lin, from The Boathouse, has thought of absolutely everything a family needs for a short break away. The kitchen, bathroom are stocked with all the essentials, towels and linen supplied. The house has all the creature comforts of home but with the added magic of its waterfront position and large windows throughout letting in lots of light and providing the most spectacular view. I could have sat in that lounge room or on those deck chairs, staring into the distance for hours!
Down by the Lake, there’s even more of the house to enjoy with a couple of rooms under the main house. The largest room contains 2 kayaks, a comfy lounge and an air hockey table while a smaller room off that is a little hideaway for kids with toys, books and a small little lounge.
Back outside, the house has its own private jetty and a 2 seater swing chair to sit and enjoy the tranquil waters of Lake Macquarie.
A Peaceful Sleep
The Boathouse sleeps 8 comfortably. There are 4 bedrooms: 2 x double beds, 1 x queen bed and 1 x bunks. The bedrooms are light and airy and very cosy, each with a comfy bed, wardrobe and bedside tables.
Things To Do at the Boathouse
My two youngest, aged 7 and 10 years spent hours in the kid's area of the main lounge room. It was so nice to see them playing board games and reading to each other.
We took fishing rods with us so the kids had a go at fishing off the house’s private jetty. They were very excited to catch a couple of little fish that they put back!
The kayaks at the house are perfect for the lake. They are big enough to have a couple of people in each one. On Saturday morning, we went out on the kayaks as a family. My husband and 10-year-old in one and myself with my 14 and 7-year-old in the other. Great fun and so peaceful on the lake!
Local Eats
On arrival to Lake Macquarie, we decided to stop for lunch before heading to The Boathouse. We stopped in at a little cafe called Jules by the Lake (14 Fishing Point Rd). It was a lovely cafe with local produce and friendly service. The menu was extensive and had something for everyone.
For dinner on our first night, we decided to head over to the local bowlo—Club Catalina. The menu is a mix of Thai and classic Australian meals, as well as a kids menu—offering great food and excellent value for money!
On Saturday, we decided to have a late lunch and cook a BBQ at the house. That meant a trip to the local IGA and butcher. When my husband walked into Rathmines Butchery, his face lit up like a kid in a lolly shop at the selection! We set up lunch on the upstairs deck with the sun streaming in; it really was paradise.
Things To Do in the Area
Lake Macquarie is the largest saltwater lake in the southern hemisphere - it’s twice the size of Sydney Harbour. It truly is an aquatic wonderland that you can explore by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. There’s plenty to do out of the water too - hike through the rainforest, visit majestic waterfalls or watch the sunrise.
We weren’t overly adventurous, preferring to enjoy soaking up the house but the girls did enjoy nearby Rathmines Park at 1 Stilling Street. It’s only a few minutes drive from the house and has a great playground!
While there is lots to do around Lake Macquarie, especially in neighbouring towns such as Toronto, Rathmines and Wangi Wangi, you could quite easily stay at the Boathouse all weekend and not leave. There is plenty to do and enjoy at the house and on the Lake at the front. We occupied ourselves mostly with the kayaks and fishing.
Do yourself a favour and head to The Boathouse at Fishing Point in Lake Macquarie for a well-deserved family break, quality time together and memories that will last a lifetime!
