Big Hose at GOMA

Right on the banks of the Brisbane River at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), a playful new landmark has dropped that's delighting locals and visitors alike.

The Big Hose is a giant, twisty art installation that looks just like an oversized garden hose — but way more impressive (it stretches a whopping 119 metres long!).

Big Hose at GOMA: Brisbane's Latest Big Thing You Can't Miss

Big Hose Goma
Big Hose, GOMA

Created by contemporary Australian artists Tony Albert and Nell, The Big Hose transforms something familiar — the garden hoses you might trip over at home — into a joyful public art installation that feels almost alive. It sits in GOMA's front yard, evoking breezy Queensland verandahs and subtropical gardens, and instantly sparks curiosity and play.

There's more here than just scale and colour. The installation sits on land rich with cultural history at Kurilpa Point — a traditional meeting place for the region's Turrbal and Yaggera peoples — and artist Tony Albert says part of the piece's story connects to local First Nations narratives, including that of Kuril, the native water rat, whose "hose hideout" can be discovered tucked into the sculpture itself.

Whether you're strolling past on South Bank, grabbing a bite at the nearby café, or planning a full day exploring GOMA's galleries, The Big Hose is a fun, quirky, and free art experience built for selfies, laughs, and big imaginations.

It's Australia’s tradition of iconic "big things", but with an arty twist that celebrates nature, community and culture — and invites everyone to look twice at the everyday.

Fancy a visit? It's right outside GOMA and free to enjoy anytime you're in Brisbane's cultural precinct.
