What It Means When You’re Pregnant And Craving Cereal
- Parents Only
Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, fatty, greasy, a combination of all at once —pregnancy cravings are as unique as your precious baby. While certain cravings may reveal a nutritional need, some are just plain weird. Today we look at what it means when you're pregnant and craving cereal!
It’s your Hormones
Women often crave many things in their premenstrual phase of their cycles because of hormonal fluctuations. Cravings for cereals with a high fat and sugar content are not uncommon. So, it comes as no surprise that when pregnant and experiencing increased estrogen levels, that cravings for things like cereal are heightened.
It’s got what you need
When we’re pregnant our bodies crave nutrient rich foods. Cereal provides our bodies with high fibre and folic acid which just so happens to be the ideal balance of carbohydrates, essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs. No wonder our pregnant selves have stocked the cupboards with cereal!
You could feel stressed
Being pregnant can cause stress, especially with the changes that start happening to the body. Stress has been linked to craving high energy foods like sugar, fats and carbohydrates. Cereal ticks this box as it contains all of these.
You may have a calcium deficiency
Your body needs a lot of calcium when you’re pregnant as it prepares for your new arrival who will feed on breast milk. Craving lots of milk can be an indication that you may have a calcium deficiency but always check with a doctor before adapting your diet. A bowl of cereal with extra milk might help curb those cravings and get that all-important calcium you and your baby need.
It’s fuss free
Let’s be honest, cereal is completely fuss free. You just pour it into the bowl and add milk! This is excellent for pregnant women who are especially tired and need a quick fix.
