Sydney❜s Best Creative Writing and Craft Classes for Kids

Art and craft classes offer kids the opportunity to get messy, try new things and learn how to harness their creative expression, making them an ideal choice for after-school or school-holiday activities. Here are some of Sydney’s best art and craft destinations.

1. Art Est. Art School

Art Est is one of Sydney's largest independent art schools, providing term courses and workshops for kids and teens. In 2022, in-studio classes are back and they will also be launching a new, permanent online art program.

Similar to the school year, they run four terms per year and while many students go for fun, some students use their portfolio to apply for selective creative High Schools. They offer discovery-style courses that cover a range of mediums each week like drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and sculpture, and specialised courses for teens like illustration, and drawing and painting fundamentals.

During the school holidays, Art Est runs a very popular 2-week workshop program. This is filled with half-day, full-day and two-day workshops for ages 5-16. Each school holiday program has fun and quirky workshops inspired by the season, famous artists like Van Gogh or Monet, or popular children's entertainment like Among Us or Manga.

2. Little Ginger Studio

Embracing the messy nature of creative play, Little Ginger Studio in Randwick is the perfect canvas for your little artist, as students of all abilities explore pottery, drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, process art, art-collaborations, recycled art and a whole lot more. 

School holiday workshops and after-school classes provide the perfect environment to bring your child’s imagination to life, whilst building positive relationships, learning new skills and being an encouraging voice to their paint-splattered peers. 

3. Story Squad

With a clear mission to help children develop a passion for the craft of creative writing and confidence in expressing their ideas, Story Squad are the best in the biz for all-things storytelling. Their diverse selection of school holiday workshops is all about encouraging children to let their imaginations run wild with mind-bending, imagination-inspiring, storytelling fun.

The workshops have been developed specifically for kids aged 5 to 12, and each day of the workshop has a unique theme - designed to provide an immersive and memorable creative experience that lives on after the day. With a combination of craft, drama, creative writing and storytelling, kids will be immersed in stories, inspired to create, and sent home with imaginations flying and tools to keep them going until their next story-tastic experience! 

4. Jenny’s Painted Pots

An idyllic location for your child’s next birthday party or just for whiling away a creative afternoon, Jenny’s Painted Pots in Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches promises hours of fun as children learn to paint ceramic animals, plates, mugs, teapots and more.

The studio provides all paints, brushes, stamps, tools and stencils, meaning that all you and your little painters have to take is a creative mindset and a willingness to have a whole lotta fun!

5. Li'l Crafters

Li'l Crafters is a process-based art, craft and messy sensory play class based in Marrickville. With a philosophy that believes creativity and curiosity should be nurtured from the very beginning, they offer mixed-aged sessions for babies to preschoolers. Li'l Crafters also host kids parties and school holiday workshops.

Crafty kids (and their grown-ups) can enjoy some creative fun as well as develop fine motor skills and build confidence while working independently and in groups. Throughout the term they learn about colours, shapes, size, proportions, using space, taking risks and sharing.

6. Maker's Loft

Maker’s Loft in Cammeray is a local creative hub that aims to inspire designers, artists and tinkerers of all ages, and enhance overall wellbeing through making and creating. They offer a diverse range of hands-on classes and school holiday programs for kids, from ceramic painting, macrame and slime workshops to High Tea packages, after school craft clubs and craft-themed parties.

They also offer a relaxed space for a range of ceramic and pottery experiences, mindful creative workshops for tweens and teens, and adult art, craft and lifestyle classes.
