Movie Playgrounds Are Now A Thing

  • Mums & Bubs

Move over indoor playgrounds, movie playgrounds are now the hottest indoor attractions for kids and parents!

If you've ever taken your little ones to the movies, you know what a stressful nightmare it can be. Luckily, movie cinemas around Australia introduced the concept of Mums & Bubs sessions, where mums can bring their bubs to a kid-friendly movie surrounded by other cranky, crying and nappy-full babies so they wouldn't feel judged. Well, something even more suited to families with little ones has just come across our radar: movie playgrounds.

Event Junior is the latest concept by Event Cinemas and is a family-friendly experience that's not unlike drive-in movies from the 80s and 90s - remember those? While mum and dad were enjoying a movie in their car us kids were free to go wild on the outdoor playground just in front of the cinema - why don't they have these anymore?! Well, it turns out they do, but these playground-come-movie-cinemas are a lot fancier than drive-in theatres!

Event Junior features an in-cinema playground complete with a slide, netted climbing gym, digital interactive games and other play equipment, aimed at children 8 years and under. These super-cool playgrounds have only been unveiled at Macquarie Centre and Shellharbour but will hopefully be rolled out in more cinemas across Australia.

For those keen to get in on the cinematic action, there are 3 ways you and the kids can make the most of Event Junior:

  • Playtime only sessions - for $5 per child 2 years and over (includes coffee or water for mum or dad)
  • Playtime sessions with a movie - 30 minutes of playtime plus a family-friendly movie for regular ticket price plus $5 per child
  • Movie only sessions - movie screening with 10-minute playtime intermission
