Max Brenner Melts Into Voluntary Administration
By: Alex Harmon, ellaslist
Excuse us while we drown our sorrows in a vat of liquid chocolate. Everyone's favourite chocolate franchise, known for its fondue, crepes, milkshakes, waffles, and hot chocolates, Max Brenner Australia, has entered administration after just 20 years of operation in the country.
Oh gosh and we only just got over the news that Adriano Zumbo's empire has gone into administation!
The cafe's owners, husband and wife Tom and Lilly Haikin, said escalating costs and tighter retail trade were the reasons for the company's sudden end.
What Does This Mean For Chocolate Lovers?
Well, the future of the 37 Australian stores (and more than 600 staff members) is uncertain but the business will continue to operate in the midst of an urgent review of operations.
Business trends expert Dr Lauren Rosewarne from The University of Melbourne said she believes one of the main reasons for the chain’s decline is a change in Aussie food habits — as in the novelty of dipping a strawberry in liquid chocolate has faded for many of us.
I'm Still Fondue You
A statement from the company thanked staff and customers for the support of the business over the years.
“Max Brenner Australia remains open for business as usual at this time,” it read.
“Chocoholics are respectfully invited to show their support by enjoying a hot chocolate or dessert as the Administrators assess the best solution to ensure Max Brenner Australia’s unique chocolate experience continues to delight millions of Australians in the future.”
