Brisbane’s Best Breakfasts with Kids

There was a time when having a late, leisurely breakfast was about catching up with friends and exchanging juicy details of our wild nights out. You sat for hours talking, laughing, sipping coffee and watching the world go by. Things are somewhat different now with two small kids in tow. So, I have taken the task of scouring cafes near and far to tell you where you can enjoy your coffee and eggs with your kids.

Charlie’s Raw Squeeze, Clontarf

Any café with a completely separate kids’ room is a winner for me. The partially enclosed play room lets you enjoy coffee and smoothies with other mammas (or on your own), while your kids safely play nearby, away from you.

It’s also a great place for older kids. There are games, cards and books sprawled all over the place, making it more like a cool friend’s house than a café.

Then there’s the menu. Charlie’s is 100% vegan and 100% delicious. Nice cream, smoothies, acai bowls and of course, avo on toast. Charlie’s is a great option for the health conscious or if you feel like you have had a bacon overload.

The Clontarf store is right on the water, opposite Pelican Park, so you can take a seaside walk after your meal.

Shingle Inn, Several Locations

I took my baby girl for her first high tea experience at Shingle Inn at Chermside for breakfast. Because we’re fancy like that. She absolutely loved the whole experience. The staff went out of their way to make her feel like a princess. She devoured the little sausage roll, posh sandwiches and cookie, washing it all down with a baby chino.

The experience, the delicate food and the wonderful setting all made her feel so grown up that she was extremely well behaved and played the part.

For a truly regal dining experience, take your high tea to the next level and visit Shingle Inn City Hall in King Georges Square, one of Brisbane’s oldest cafes. Enjoy the gorgeous setting of a the historic building and large open spaces.

Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen, West End

This delightful West End Café has a wonderful, outdoor play area with enough toys to keep the busiest of hands busy. My kids are quite picky and weren’t keen on the kid’s menu, but given that they are mini giants, they devoured the free-range eggs from the adult menu.

The food at this place is so incredibly delicious and Miss Bliss herself is a nutritionist. So you can enjoy your gorgeous breakfast knowing it’s good for you.

Birds & Bees, Everton Park

Gated play area! Really, that’s all you need to know and that would be enough to make this Brisbane’s greatest breakfast venue for kids. But there is so much more.

The menu is full of tasty options that kids and grown ups will love.

Between the gated play area and Empanadas (beef & potato parcel with chimichurri) for breakfast, this is hands down, the best place to go if mum and dad had a large night and need food, coffee and quiet.

Kids Play Café, Pure Tennis, Ferny Hills

I took my kids here shortly after we planted little fairy gardens at home. When they first laid eyes on the outdoor area, they screamed, “It’s a fairy garden.” That’s exactly how it felt. The magical outdoor area was designed by parents to ensure that kids are captivated so parents can enjoy their coffee.

The menu has a range of light food options and tasty treats for the kids. It’s a great way to introduce kids to tennis.

Soul Pantry, Stafford

I am absolutely obsessed with pastries, so you can imagine my delight when I saw Brunch Bakes on the menu here. The puff pastry for these bakes (salmon, mushroom or spinach) is so flaky and scrumptious. No matter what you order from this gorgeous café, your taste buds will thank you.
The kids area is a rustic corner with a tent, some toys, craft and enough to keep the keep the kids entertained while you enjoy the scrumptious morsels.

The entire venue is a delight for the senses. Plants, flowers, cheese and excellent coffee, be sure to carve out a fair chunk of your day to enjoy this place.
