There is nothing quite like a library. It’s not just a building, it’s a place full of stories and history and legends – and despite their reputation for being super quiet, they’re also a place welcoming to children and parents. You can visit in any weather, and there are often great activities tailored to small children that make them a great place to spend a morning or afternoon.

Here are our six favourite libraries to visit in Brisbane:

Queensland State Library

No list of Brisbane libraries would be complete without this wonder. Set in the cultural precinct next to the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Museum, the library is home to The Corner, a magical space with dedicated staff and activities that change regularly. Listen to a story, make something at the craft table, explore the theme of the moment, or curl up with a book – there is always something to do and see.

When: 7 days 10am to 3pm

Brisbane Square Library

Just across Victoria Bridge in the CBD you’ll find Brisbane Square Library in the iconic cubist Brisbane City Council Building. It has a range of story and song time sessions as well as fun activities in the school holidays. The dedicated kids’ section has heaps of books, as well as low tables, craft activities and giant LEGO blocks.

Mitchelton Library

Mitchelton is a wonderful library with all the regular things you’d expect from a well-equipped suburban library – a great range of books, friendly and knowledgable staff and some delightful storytime sessions (Wednesday and Friday mornings). But to be honest, what sets it apart is two things: it has a great barista making coffee on the wide deck outside, where you can sit and enjoy a coffee and a snack, and it’s right next to a massive park and playground, where your children can let off some steam while you’re enjoying said coffee and snack. It’s an all-round wonderful morning out of the house.

Albany Creek Library is a local treasure, with a raft of activities for babies and pre-schoolers including storytime, rhyme time and playtime activities. For those with older children there are also book clubs, study support and online gaming after school every day. There is even a dedicated session for teens every Friday night called Hype. And bonus: it’s right next to a fenced playground, so you can let your little ones run wild after holding it together in the
