It's beginning to look a lot like you-know-what. And there's nothing to get you in the Christmas spirit like hanging out at some local markets to kick off your shopping.

Brisbane is brimming with great market options where you can listen to some great music, shop up a storm, and enjoy a bite to eat. If you're looking to keep the kids entertained as well, this sure beats a shopping centre.

There really is nothing like the atmosphere of a market - and you can double that at Christmas time. The air is abuzz with Christmas cheer, and the children can feel the magic.

Here are the best markets in Brisbane to get you in the yuletide mood.

Southbank Christmas Village

This is the official Christmas market of Brisbane city, and it's centrally located at Stanley Street Plaza, Southbank for nine days and evenings each year. It comes with the added bonus of being close to all of Southbank's attractions like Streets Beach, cafes and restaurants, and the cinemas, so it's even more enticing for the children (and you, who are we kidding?).

When: Dates TBC

Where: Stanley Street Plaza, Southbank

Brisbane Twilight Markets

In the heart of the city, and under Brisbane's massive Christmas tree and the lit-up Town Hall, the BrisStyle market is a joy. The stalls are all lit up and there's some great jazz music going on too. As an evening market this one might be a great opportunity to ditch the kids and enjoy some adult time, otherwise you could be hearing, "I'm bored; I'm tired; I want to go home," before you've bought a single present.

When: Saturday, 1 December, 4pm to 9pm

Where: King George Square, Brisbane City

QAGOMA Store Christmas Design Market

If you like your gifts a bit on the arty side, you can’t go past QAGOMA store, located at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art. The market has over 40 different stalls selling gifts from ceramics and textiles to a range of paper products – but you can be sure whatever you find here, you won’t see in the department stores.

Where: QAGOMA, Melbourne St, South Brisbane

Brisbane Fair Trade Christmas Market

If shopping ethically is your bag, you can get everything you need at the Brisbane Fair Trade Christmas Market, and enjoy the silly season with a clear conscience. The fair trade market will feature a carefully selected group of stallholders, including Oxfam, Wanderlust People, The Woven Trail, and Siham Craftlink.
