Kids At The Con: Open Academy School Holiday Workshops

Do your kids love singing, musical instruments and a little bit of drama? A school holiday workshop at Open Academy might be just what your looking for!

Open Academy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Structured Workshops are based on the Orff-Schulwerk approach, Dalcroze and Kodaly methods, and will include activities such as singing, imitation, movement, playing tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, improvisation, story-telling and guided listening activities.

Participants only need to attend one workshop, as the material will be repeated the following day.

Holiday Workshops for 3-4 Year Olds

Our youngest participants will explore musical concepts like pitch, beat, and tempo through creative play and various unconscious learning activities. Listening and motor skills will be engaged through echo singing, movement, imitation, playing percussion instruments, and musical games. These 50-minute daily workshops will be led by tutor Simona Green. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sit in with their children to listen to the activities and recreate them at home.

Holiday Workshops for 4-5 Year Olds

Activities in this workshop will be similar to those for 3-4’s but at a slightly faster pace and targeted to match the higher levels of older participants. More complex rhythmic activities and listening exercises will be presented. This workshop also runs for 50 minutes each day and will be taken by tutor Simona Green. Parental attendance is encouraged.

Holiday Workshops for 5-6 Year Olds

This workshop, spanning 3 hours each day, includes pitch and rhythm work using tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, active listening activities, and if time allows, the opportunity to make your own instrument. Tutors Irene Stone and Samantha Xu will lead these sessions.

Holiday Workshops for 6-10 Year Olds

The 6-10 year olds will enjoy a 5-hour workshop each day, including pitch and rhythm work, active listening activities, and the opportunity to make their own instrument. Irene Stone and Samantha Xu will guide these sessions. Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off their children in the morning and return at 1.45 pm for a ‘mini performance’ showcasing what they've learned.
