Dinner Persona: Alana Whitting – Conscious Cook

Dinner at our house is planned, purchased and prepared by our head chef – me! I’m very focused on ensuring our family eats fresh food, which is Australian made where possible. We try to avoid preservatives, additives and all those nasty ‘numbers’. My two mini food critics can be harsh and fussy with certain foods at times, so planning each week’s meals can get tricky. Most of all getting dinner time together around the table is important for our family, giving us all time to talk to each other about our day.

Overall: It was like Christmas for busy Mums when our My Family Food Bag delivery arrived (which also contained a surprise treat for Dad as it arrived on Father’s Day.)

It was evident that My Food Bag’s philosophy on food was in line with our food values and the way we try to eat. Our girls love to help prepare dinner, grabbing ingredients for each meal. They are always so proud to serve dinner when they’ve contributed to its creation – and more likely to eat it too! Our girls enjoyed all of the meals during the week – their favourites being the fish fingers made with fresh kingfish and the honey-stung beef and noodles, which were devoured.

Quality & deliciousness of the food: I was really impressed with the quality of the produce and products in My Food Bag, everything was sourced for us without all the hassle and was of the highest quality.

Our My Food Bag week also gave us a chance to try things we hadn’t had in a while. I loved the fact that previously shunned ingredients were surprisingly loved when they were part of the week’s menu. Not only did having the meals planned and ingredients supplied save me a lot of time, but it also added an element of excitement in wondering what we would get to enjoy during the week.

Would you recommend it? Yes. Our family would give My Food Bag 4 1/2 stars, it really is a great service, backed by quality products and produce and appealing meals. You can see how much thought has gone into all areas of the My Food Bag offering.

Convenience: The range of My Food Bag options available provide alternatives suitable for any family size or type, I could see the My Gourmet Bag would be great for couples like my parents and the My Own Bag perfect for some of my busy single friends.

I like that the meals are well planned out across the week. To ensure that everything can be enjoyed as fresh as possible and at its best, hey suggest preparing the fish and poultry at the start of the week then moving through to meats and ending with the vegetable based meals. The e-newsletter also outlines in advance the pantry staples you’ll need to have for the week so you can ensure you’ve got them handy. It is also clever that they share ingredients through several dishes to minimise wastage and take advantage of seasonal produce.

The website is also fantastic and is enough to make your mouth water revealing what meals are coming up for the weeks ahead. The recipes were easy to follow and the recipe cards gave a great overview of the meals’ dietary details and preparation information. The My Food Bag team have great communication around when your delivery will arrive and letting you know once it has been delivered.

Value for money: The portion sizes were very generous for our family (two adults and two young children) which allowed us to have some yummy leftovers to enjoy as lunch the next day.
