Yong at Arts Centre Melbourne

Get ready to set sail on an unforgettable adventure. Coming soon to Arts Centre Melbourne, Yong is a powerful and heartfelt new Australian play that whisks you from a tiny village in China to the bustling goldfields of Ballarat during the 1857 Gold Rush.

Yong at Arts Centre Melbourne

Based on the book Yong: The Journey of an Unworthy Son by Janeen Brian, this tale blends historical fact with fiction to tell the moving story of a boy caught between duty and dreams.

Yong travels to Australia with his father in search of fortune, but he’d rather be back home. As he faces hardship and unexpected challenges, Yong discovers strength, courage and resilience he never knew he had.

Brought to life by Monkey Baa’s Artistic Director Eva Di Cesare and an outstanding creative team, Yong is more than just a story from the past — it’s a compelling and contemporary journey made for today’s young audiences.

Note: due to themes of parental death, racism, and simulated violence, the age recommendation for Yong is ages 10+.
