If you want to scare your kids straight, you can’t go past a tour of Boggo Road Gaol, which has been home to some of Queensland’s most notorious criminals.

Over 119 years of operation, thousands of prisoners passed through the red brick walls of the prison, including the “Houdini of Boggo Road” Slim Halliday (subject of hit novel Boy Swallows Universe), and Whiskey Au Go Go bombers James Finch and John Stuart.

In the 1980s the gaol was the scene of some dramatic escapes, riots, hunger strikes and roof-top protests, leading to its closure in 1992.

Now a heritage site, the prison is open daily for tours that will have everyone enthralled.

ellaslist opinion: The folks at Boggo Road have kindly given age recommendations for each type of tour as some are a bit scary or graphic for the littlies. Check the website to ensure you’re on a tour that won’t give anyone nightmares!
