Grab your picnic rug, pack some snacks and stake out your spot for a fireworks extravaganza this New Year's Eve - Melbourne never disappoints!
Plenty of parties and festivities go down across the city, and you'd find it pretty easy to get to a place to see the spectacular light shows.
If you're headed into any of the city locations it's always best to go early and get a good spot, so even if you can't go yourself (or think the kids will last that long!) send someone on ahead for a recon. It'll be a great night!
The official live sites for viewing are Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain near the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, with accompanying entertainment, but there are plenty of other options if that's not your style this year.
For earlier fireworks (helpful for families!) Yarra Park and Footscray Park will have a 9.30pm option. These are alcohol-free events.
Footscray Park
Maribyrnong City Council is hosting New Year’s Eve fireworks at 9.30pm in Footscray Park located on Ballarat Road, Footscray. Families can bring along picnic supplies, enjoy free entertainment and watch a fireworks display at 9.30pm. Details here.
Time: 6.30pm – 10.30pm
Treasury Gardens Park
The Gardens offer one of the best skyline viewing spots, so is a fantastic option for NYE fun. There'll be entertainment and a DJ from 9pm, but the fireworks are only at midnight, so one to go to with the bigger kids.
Time: 9pm – 1am
Flagstaff Gardens
Get right in the thick of the action at Flagstaff, where there is plenty of space in the park to settle in for the evening before the midnight fireworks.
Time: 9pm – 1am
City of Melbourne Yarra Park
Early Eve at Yarra Park brings together all the exciting parts of celebrating the new year without the late night out. Families can enjoy free stage entertainment, films and a spectacular fireworks display at 9.30pm. All entertainment is duplicated in two distinct zones across the site to assist with large crowds. Details here.
Time: 6pm – 10pm
King's Domain Flinders St Station
Tons of opportunity to join the community revelry at the Domain in the lead-up to the midnight fireworks!
Time: 9pm – 1am
Docklands
One of the City of Melbourne's official viewing sites, there's great entertainment prior to the countdown/fireworks extravaganza surrounding Victoria harbour, and plenty of parties to join once it's all over.
Time: 9pm – 1am
Federation Square
No bones about this, you're going to need to get here early. But what a terribly Melbourne way of ringing in the new year!
Throughout The Suburbs
Quite a few spots will have their own light show, so check with your local council - but anywhere you can get a clear view of the city skyline, you'll be treated to the main event. Try and have a party on a rooftop, or convince your cousin in the tall apartment block to let you up for the show! You can even listen to the official synchronised soundtrack live on FM99.7.
