The Workshops Rail Museum, Ipswich  

A museum dedicated to trains and the history of rail in Queensland, is sure to be on top of any list of places to take your train-obsessed child! The Workshops Rail Museum has more than 15 interactive permanent exhibitions giving kids the opportunity to explore real locomotives and build on their knowledge of trains. Kids will love the Nippers Railway indoor playground for hands-on fun with wooden train sets, dress-up clothes and a kid-sized train. You can see inside a diesel locomotive, drive a diesel simulator and see the largest model railway in Queensland. Adults will love the heritage tour and the chance to see railway heritage items. Want to learn about the science behind train travel? Check out the new Sciencentre at the museum open until June 2019.

The Xpress Fun Train, South Bank 

Perfect for tiny tots, this trackless train operates daily from 10 am – 5 pm. The whole family can hop on board the train around the corner from the Wheel of Brisbane and set off on an adventure through the parklands. For just $5 per person, this is cheap and cheerful fun.

Melsa Train Park, Bribie Island

If you’re looking for something with a bit more oomph, the Melsa Park miniature steam train takes its passengers on a short but sweet 500 metre ride through beautiful bushlands. Train rides are super cheap at just $2 and you can grab a bite to eat at the Lion’s Club sausage sizzle afterwards. Operating on the third Sunday of every month between 10 am – 2.30 pm, this is a fun and inexpensive day out.

Brisbane Bayside Steam Railway

On Brisbane’s bayside, you can take the family on a steam or diesel train ride through bushland in Wynnum. On the first and third Sunday of each month, the trains depart from Wynnum Junction Station on Wynnum Road. For just $2, this is a great day out for the family with plenty of locomotives to explore.

Milton Park, Milton 

Take your tiny train driver to Milton Park for hours of fun in this train-themed playground. Kids can explore the replica train and let their imaginations take them on an adventure. You’ll also find your usual swings and slides at the park and plenty of room to scoot around.

Southern Downs Steam Railway 

If you’re up for an adventure, the Southern Downs Steam Railway offers historic steam train rides. The kids will love to experience the thrill of chugging along on a vintage steam train and embracing their inner Fat Controller. The Southern Downs Steam Railway offers short 1.5-hour train trips leaving - ideal for families.
