Devo! Australia Among the Top 10 Unhappiest Countries in the World

  • All Ages

Hold onto your flat whites and avo toasts, because we've got some news that'll make your inner larrikin do a sad little shuffle. Despite being the land of 'yeah, nah' and 'no worries', it turns out us Aussies are actually a bunch of gloomy gusses. According to the latest report from the Global Mind Project, we're sitting pretty – or should I say, pretty miserably – among the top 10 unhappiest countries in the world. Devo!

Australia Among the Top 10 Unhappiest Countries in the World

Australia ranked number six among the unhappiest countries in the world.

Even with our gorgeous beaches, killer barbies, and those big, weird rocks in the middle of nowhere, Australia has still managed to come in at number six among the unhappiest countries in the world.

The report from the Global Mind Project's annual "Mental State of the World" survey (which sounds like it’s judging us harder than a MAFS contestant) assesed over half a million people across 71 countries, proving that not even our legendary harbour bridges or world-famous coral reefs can save us from the post-pandemic blues. The report divided mental well-being into six categories, from mood and outlook, to how well your brain and body are getting along to divulge the results.

So, who's out-sad-sacking us? Uzbekistan are in the top spot followed by the Brits in second spot (no surprises there, what with all that rain). But wait, it gets worse. The top 10 happiest countries in the world were also released to add some more salt to the wound.

She'll Be Right

Australia is still one of the top five countries to live in.

Now, before you chuck a major wobbly, it's not all bad news. Despite our apparent national case of the sads, Australia still managed to snag a spot in the top five best countries to live in last year. Sydney and Melbourne are still killing it in the liveability stakes, too. So, maybe it's just a case of the post-pandemic blues, or maybe we're all just a bit miffed about the price of houses these days. Either way, grab a Tim Tam, chuck on some tunes, and remember – there's always a silver lining, even if it's just the shiny inside of a chip packet.
