Sydney kids and families are invited to join in what's shaping up to be an action-packed, fun-filled week of hands-on arty fun at the MCA!
Best of all, it’s for all ages and inclusive. At the MCA, art is for everyone. All of the programs can support for access and disability requirements on request – this means everyone can join in together!
Monday: Have the Galleries to yourself
On Mondays, as the city recovers from the weekend and prepares for the week ahead, the MCA is a bit quieter. It is the perfect day to roam the MCA with your family and avoid the crowds. You can pick up Sketch cards at the Information Desk and explore the exhibitions at your own pace. Sketch cards are fun and simple activities for kids that stir the imagination and help them understand the art they are looking at.
The MCA has got everything covered – from baby changing facilities, cloakroom, pram parking, hosts to assist you in the galleries and child-friendly meals in the MCA Cafe.
Before you head home, drop into the MCA Store to pick up something to take home. There is a great range of activities, toys and books to inspire budding artists.
Tuesday: Art Safari!
Explore a different theme and exhibition every month through collaborative play, storytelling, movement and art-making, led by the MCA's Artist Educators. Kids will play games, share stories, exchange ideas and of course, get messy in the Creative Studios with fun, hands-on art-making activities. Today's theme is Terrific Textures, where kids will be exposed to all things soft, prickly, rough and smooth.
Suitable for ages 3–5. Bookings essential- book here!
Wednesdays: Art Play
Suitable for ages 5 and under. Drop-in, the MCA welcomes a $5 donation per family.
The best part of Wednesdays is that you can touch everything! On Wednesdays, we open the doors to the brand new interactive Bella Room, Room of Lucky Charms by Kate Benyon. It’s filled with more than 500 soft good luck charms that the artist created, drawn from her Chinese and Welsh heritage. Use them to create your own secret codes and messages, make patterns or just play!
Afterwards, settle into the Creative Studios at the MCA and get stuck into some art-making. Read a story and sing songs in a colourful, open space overlooking the Harbour Bridge. (Wednesdays each week except during school holidays)
Thursday: Art Baby
Suitable for parents and carers with babies up to 12 months old. Bookings essential!
You’ll need to be quick to get bub and you into this one. Art Baby started last year and books out so quickly that the MCA has recently added more programs.
Explore the exhibitions with the MCA's Artist Educators and then take part in an interactive play session with like-minded families on an INCREDIBLE artist-designed multi-sensory blanket. A great museum experience for babies and also a chance for you to enjoy some time with the art. Prams, front packs and slings welcome.
Friday: Art is for Everyone
Well, art is for everyone every day of the week. If you have a child with access or disability requirements, the MCA has a free initiative called Bella Extension that lets them take part in any of the MCA’s Kids & Families programs by providing you with a trained Artist Educator to assist them. This means your child can do any program they like (including the ones listed above) and it costs you only the standard booking fees for the program or nothing if it is a free program. The MCA can support physical, sensory, neurological, intellectual or learning disabilities and more.
To book support, email [email protected] with the program and details of your requirements or call 02 9245 2484. (Ideal to give them two weeks’ notice.)
