Celebrate Sydney Science Festival with the FREE Sounds of Space exhibition!

In Sounds of Space the arts and sciences merge, with an immersive projection room showcasing incredible recordings from Space, alongside a curated group show featuring an exciting collection of Australian artists.

Sounds of Space is a free inclusive community event happening in Redfern this August that merges the arts and sciences with two exhibition spaces; a large scale projection room showcasing mind-blowing astrophotography, video and audio recordings from Space, and a curated group show of mixed media works from an exciting collection of Australian artists including disability advocate, Digby Webster and Indigenous artist Karen Lee.

The projection room will feature a rotating program of audio/video works. The first will be a traditional look at the actual electromagnetic resonance recordings from Space and the second will be a look into musical interpretations of the Universe featuring works by Classical composers Holst and Debussy and Contemporary pieces by Australian artists Oliver Tank and WZRDKID and French artist Valentin Stip.

This unique exhibition is geared towards inclusive community engagement hoping to spark joy, discovery and awe that lies in the boundless Space surrounding us. They will soon announce a community program including: an astronomy lecture on Astrophotography and Australian Indigenous Astronomy, a family day with children's performer Nay Nay, Space yoga and kids craft and an evening Space collage workshop for adults, all FREE of charge.

Special programs and artists will be announced so stay tuned for more details and keep your eyes on the Stars. As this is an accessible, family friendly, all ages event the venue does have access for wheelchairs and prams. In the unlikely event the gallery space becomes too full for prams we ask for patience and understanding as prams may need to be left outside the projection room to create space for patrons and the event takes no responsibility for unsupervised personal belongings.  Bringing babies and younger ones in a carrier may be helpful.

Please note that the projection room is quite dark and the visuals are very large to create an immersive feeling, as such, some younger visitors may find it a little overwhelming. However, there is so much to see in the remaining gallery and they believe there is something for everyone in the family. For the duration of any free family craft workshops (soon to be advertised) they will increase the lighting levels in the projection space and lower the volume slightly to make it mchild-friendly as they want young ones to engage with the exhibition as much as anyone else.

Sounds of Space is completely not-for-profit run by a small team of volunteers and artists working to bring this free event to the community.
