Riding the Rails offers a fascinating and unique glimpse of times past. This short train ride takes visitors around part of the former Royal Australian Navy Armament Depot – now a 52 hectare heritage site known as Newington Armory.
Once used to transport missiles, torpedoes and other WW2 munitions, the Heritage Train at Newington Armory is today one of Sydney Olympic Park’s most popular attractions.
The historic site features more than 100 buildings dating back to the 1890s, including explosives storehouses and workshops, cottages and wharf.
Set amidst a landscape of rolling grassland and a scattering of mature trees, Newington Armory is situated between the southern bank of the Parramatta River and the suburb of Newington.
With snippets of commentary from on-board tour guides, Riding the Rails is a 30 minute ride. It runs every Sunday from 10:30am until 1:00pm.
Tickets can be purchased on the day at the Armory Visitor Centre (located near the main entrance to Newington Armory) for $5. Children under 3 year free if seated on an adult’s lap.
