Exclusive to Sydney this summer, Pop to Popism is the most comprehensive survey of pop art to be seen in Australia, now showing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, as part of the Sydney International Art Series.
Spanning three decades, from the mid 1950s to the 1980s, Pop to popism traces the origins of pop art, its heady high period, and its enduring legacy both in Australia and abroad.
Pop to popism is one of the most ambitious exhibitions undertaken by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, featuring 200 works by more than 70 of pop’s greatest artists, and taking over an entire floor.
For the first time, Australian pop artists will be presented alongside their international peers from America, Britain and Europe. Artists include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Richard Hamilton, Cindy Sherman, Martin Sharp, and Brett Whiteley.
Works have been borrowed 49 major institutions and private collections worldwide, including the Tate and Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the National Gallery of Art, Washington and Museum of Modern Art and Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, New York.
