Come and play at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) these July School Holidays. There are a range of programs for adults and children to discover contemporary art together.

Contemporary Kids: Curious Inventors (4yrs+)

Calling all curious inventors for a week long art making extravaganza inspired by current exhibition New Romance: art & the posthuman.

Explore virtual worlds, make friends with robots and discover imaginary creatures on your expedition through the gallery, then finish with fun artmaking activities!

Put on your lab goggles and prepare to tinker with recycled and unusual materials to create magical hybrid creatures, experiment with drawing machines and step into a giant diorama of a futuristic world.

Where:     Creative Studios, National Centre for Creative Learning
When:       Tuesday 5–Saturday 9 July, 10.30am–4pm
Cost:           Drop-in, with a $5 donation per family welcomed

Junior Art School – Jumaadi: The Life and Death of a Shadow (5-12yrs)

Family friendly performance by Indonesian-Australian artist Jumaadi which draws on a form of traditional Indonesian theatre called wayang kulit. In this new work, Jumaadi tells the story of a deaf musician who teaches the art of shadow play to his blind son. Following Jumaadi’s performance you and your family are invited to explore performance props, experiment with shadow play and chat with the artist during an intimate hands-on artmaking workshop!

Junior Art School – Tale Spin (5-8yrs) 

Explore how artists communicate stories through their artworks as we search for clues and scrawl our way through the exhibition Telling Tales – Excursions in Narrative Form with artist and writer Athena Cabot.

Experiment with storytelling, creative writing and illustration through a series of fun play-based activities in the gallery then work collaboratively to concoct an imaginative piece in the Creative Studios.

Junior Art School – Reimagination (9-12yrs) 

Take a journey through the exhibition New Romance: art and the posthuman with Artist Stephanie Lade, meeting radical robots and imaginary creatures along the way!

Inspired by this fantastical futuristic world, experiment with a range of ordinary materials to create something extraordinary during a collaborative hands-on investigation and making session in the Digital Studios.

NEW to MCA: Bella Extension – A FREE access program to support inclusive learning for students and families.

Bella Extension is offered as a free supplement to any Artist Educator led school program or Kids and Families event. The aim of Bella Extension is to offer seamless support for inclusive class excursions and families with access needs participating in drop-in and booked family programs. Additional Bella trained Artist Educators are allocated upon request of a Bella Extension, providing individually tailored support for children and young people with learning and support needs within an inclusive whole class experience or Kids and Families event.

All Artist Educator led school programs and the entire suite of Kids and Families programs are eligible for a Bella Extension. Advance bookings are essential and the program is subject to availability.
