If you have a child that is a buddy young Scientist, then don’t look past the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney’s Ultimo this Spring school holidays.


Particle Smash (all ages): 10am − 5pm daily
Use your arms, legs and whole body to chase and catch virtual particles – then smash them together on the walls of the Powerhouse! This large-scale projection uses Microsoft Kinect motion-sensing technology so you can interact with the particles in a virtual world.

Explosion of the Day (all ages): 11.30am, 1.30pm, 3pm daily
Ignite your curiosity with exploding gummy bears and liquid nitrogen experiments. Find out about the explosive science behind the bang from the Museum’s expert educators.

Particle Hide and Seek (7yrs+): 10am − 5pm daily
Take an augmented reality particle hunt using your own smartphone to explore the Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory. Follow the clues to find hidden subatomic particles and learn each particle’s unique tale.

Kids Science Q&A (6yrs+): 12.30pm − 1.30pm daily
Meet science experts and find out about their work and how they got to be where they are. Bring along your science or engineering questions to be answered on the spot.

Big Bang Hands-on Zone (4yrs+): 10am − 4.30pm daily
Hands-on activities to get little minds ticking. Draw Spirographs inspired by ATLAS detector collisions, take a 360-degree video tour of the Large Hadron Collider and more.

Micro Particle Play Area (1-5yrs): 10am − 5pm daily
Calling all tiny scientists! Have fun in our play area designed especially for under 5s. Play with subatomic particle plushies and the giant fuzzy felt particle wall.


Thinkspace Digital Learning Workshops (7yrs+)
Explore gaming, video making, coding, computer science and digital media in interactive workshops. New Spring workshops include making wearable technology using fibre optics, creating video game controllers from scratch, YouTube 360 movie making and music making classes using Korg Little Bits.

Collider exhibition (7yrs+): Until 30 October, 10am − 5pm daily
Journey inside the world’s largest science experiment. This immersive exhibition from Science Museum, London, blends theatre, video and sound art with scientific artifacts, recreating a visit to the famous particle physics laboratory, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.
