Whether it's your first time coming here or your millionth time, you'll never get bored of these amazing zoos.The popular zoos have hundreds of species of animals from all around the world. Their Wild Encounters programs allow you to get up close and personal with all kinds of animals including giraffes, lemurs, seals and giant tortoises.

There's plenty to do during these winter holidays at these zoos as well

Melbourne Zoo

The Trail of the Elephants exhibit is another favourite, and it’s FREE! Meander through an Asian village garden, home to beautiful and grand Asian elephants, or get involved in Keeper Kids- a playspace where children learn what it takes to be a zookeeper!

Other experiences include Meet the Keeper which occurs daily, Gorilla Breakfasts and Zoo Twilights live music sessions. The best part? Kids go FREE during the school holidays as well!

You can take your own food and picnic at prime spots scattered all over the zoo. Perhaps fancy a meal near the lions or the elephants. Or enjoy an array of hot and cold food options available at multiple locations around the zoo. 

This winter in an Australian-first, The National Geographic Photo Ark is coming to Melbourne Zoo for a special exclusive exhibition. This exclusive photo exhibition is using the power of photography to inspire people to save animals before it’s too late.

Werribee Open Range Zoo 

Who’s up for a zoo adventure after dark? Wild Nights return these school holidays with a whole new range of activities. 

For seven nights only, spot animals by torchlight and see Werribee Open Range Zoo come to life after dark. Be mesmerised by the dazzling fire performers and lantern parades, toast marshmallows by the campfire, explore the hidden treasures of the secret garden and get lost in the glow zone. 

Explore the sights and sounds of Africa in the new Cirque Africa acrobatic show in the heated and seated tent. 
Hot chocolates, mulled wine and warm winter food will all be available as well

Healesville Sanctuary 

Take an adventure to the stunning Yarra Valley these winter school holidays. Healesville Sanctuary will be warming zoo visitors, old and young alike, with a Winter Bushland Adventure. Visit the magical ‘storynook’ at the Heritage Shelter and enjoy animated readings of classic Aussie kids' stories against the beautiful backdrop of a cosy open fire.

And if that’s not enough to warm you from the inside out, check out the Harvest Soup Festival. Exclusive to school holidays, Sanctuary Harvest will offer a different hot warming soup every day.

All soups will be made from local Yarra Valley produce. The delicious flavors include: 

  • Indian spiced pumkin with red lentils
  • Harvest tomato & tuscan bean
  • Split pea & ham hock (Chef's choice)
