Melbourne is just about the city that never sleeps, but the law does require some shut-downs come Christmas Day! While there's little to no shopping to be had, plenty of services are allowed to remain open, and restaurants and cafes across the city will be trading that day.

Looking for lunch or maybe just something to do on the day? You're sure to find a string of things to do that will be just as magical as any other Christmas you could conceive. Get your festive wear on and head out into Melbourne for Christmas Day!

Federation Square

There will be a few cafes and bits and bobs open in the very Christmassy-decorated Fed Square. It's the last day to snap a selfie in front of the six-metre glittering Christmas bauble, catch the huge LED Christmas tree light and sound show and take a peek inside Santa's House. The iconic Timeout Fed Square on the corner of Flinders Street and St Kilda Road will be open for noshing all-day - no booking required.

Royal Botanic Gardens

The Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens will be open 7.30am to sunset for you to picnic, wander, or just escape for a little while among nature on Christmas Day.

Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo is once again hosting their Christmas Day Lunch from noon to 3pm with entry to the zoo from 11am. Feast on festive buffet lunch where you will find the best of the season’s Christmas fare including seafood, salads & roasted meats, followed by an enticing grand dessert buffet. Bookings are essential.

The zoo itself is open from 9am to 5pm so you can catch the keeper talks and enjoy the summer program. Plus, Children under 16 are FREE on Victorian public holidays. Bonus!

Sealife Melbourne Aquarium

The Sealife Melbourne Aquarium is open 9.30am to 6pm on Christmas Day, and you can indulge in a merry three-course feast at their Christmas Day Lunch surrounded by a spectacular floor-to-ceiling tropical marine display. The deal includes unlimited drinks, all-day entry to the aquarium and a visit from Santa.

Eureka Skydeck

See Melbourne from a bird's eye view on top of the Eureka Skydeck from 10am to 5.00pm on Christmas Day, or go a little extra with The Edge experience, suspended 300 meters over Melbourne in a glass cube!
