As the weather heats up and we steamroll our way from spring to summer, there’s plenty to see and do in Sydney’s burgeoning cultural calendar. And in case you missed it—the festive season is also upon us, meaning a boat-load of family fun is waiting to be had.

Catching a show at one of Sydney’s iconic locations is the perfect way to escape the blazing sun for an hour or two, and immerse your kids in all-things dramatic while you’re at it. We’ve rounded up the best shows for kids in Sydney this summer, and we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Sarah & Duck’s Big Top Birthday

If your kids are fans of the much-loved CBeebies series, Sarah & Duck, this theatre performance might just make their year. Perfect for little ones ages 3 and over, the show is told through a fantastic blend of puppetry, storytelling and music, taking all those in the theatre on a magical adventure.

Storytime Ballet - Coppélia

The Nutcracker

Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus

Offering the perfect chance for children to experience the spirit of Mozart’s work, this comedy fuses classical music with a circus twist. Acrobatics, aerial work and hula-hooping all feature prominently, and little ones will be spellbound by the whirling, twirling and tumbling of the performers. Recommended for kids aged 4 and above.

Splash Test Dummies

A mischievous show that kids will adore, Splash Test Dummies offers an hour-long aquatic adventure, showcased through synchronised swimming on unicycles, human balancing acts and water-skiing through the theatre. This slapstick comedy will have children (and adults!) roaring with laughter.

Puppeteria

 The Jeral Puppets present their twelfth Summer Festival of Puppetry with six different programs for the Christmas to January school holidays at their Puppeteria Theatre in Castle Cove. Offering something for all ages— from Pinocchio and Cinderella, Peter Pan plus Snow White and the Gingerbread man, as well as a festive special—this season of shows promises to delight the whole family.

Presented by Monkey Baa Theatre Company and featuring the ultimate rambunctious kidult-comedy-duo, The Listies, Ickypedia is a seriously silly show that will answer all of life's most unimportant questions. Boasting gross humour and a LOT of mischief with snotmonsters, bubble machines and toilet paper guns, Ickypedia offers a delightful mix of clowning and complete chaos that the whole family will enjoy.

Deadly 60 Down Under

Steve Backshall’s brand new stage show, Deadly 60 Down Under sees Steve welcome Australia’s deadliest animals live on stage, as he shares the wildest Deadly footage from his time in Australia. 

Kids will delight in watching him being lowered from a helicopter to dangle into a crocodile’s nest or hand-catch the world’s most venomous octopus just off Sydney Harbour.
