“Flexible Seating”

The “flexible seating” method has taken Hexter Elementary School in Dallas by storm. “As we learn more about how our minds and bodies are all connected, how it’s one unit, I think we’re going to see more of it,” Principal Jennifer Jackson told The Dallas News. Second grade student Qualyon Perkins said “It helps me because when I get wiggly, I don’t have to act crazy. I can just bounce or wobble,” he said.
In these classrooms, children have the option to lie on on their tummies on plush mats, rock on the wobble chairs, bounce on stability balls or sit on pillows around tables low to the ground.

Second grade teacher Jennifer Cass has already noticed a difference. She got rid of traditional chairs when she noticed that they were going unused with all of the kids’ fidgeting. The alternative classroom seating arrangements were funded by donations via the website DonorsChoose.org, which now has 3000 pending requests from teachers wanting to try it out in their classrooms.
