Sydney Festival What's On - January 2017
Sydney comes alive in January 2017 as it transforms into a stage of the best arts and cultural celebration with the Sydney Festival.
Events, exhibitions and performances will be held all over Sydney from the CBD to Parramatta and Western Sydney. There are a variety of great family-friendly events and programs on offer.
Circus – Tipping Point: 17-21 January, Spaghetti Circus Big Top, Prince Alfred Square
London-based Ockham’s Razor push themselves to the limit on 5-metre metal poles that transform into a myriad of walkways, pillars and pendulums in a blend of circus, acrobatics, playground games and trust exercises.
You and Me and the Space Between: 17-21 January, Seymour Centre
Part picture book and part play. A magical tale of an adventurous girl which unfolds live in front of your eyes.
The Beach at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve: 7-29 January; 10am-5pm (closed Mondays) – FREE
Plunge into a white ocean of over one million balls. This summer, for a cool change, hit The Beach – a joyous monochromatic installation of 1.1 million recyclable polyethylene balls that make an ocean without sharks.
Ferrython: 26 January; 10.45am, Sydney Harbour – FREE
Sydney Festival’s annual Australia day extravaganza on Sydney Harbour.
Opera In The Domain: 21 January; 8pm, The Domain – FREE
Opera Australia’s biggest stars, under the stars. Pack a picnic blanket.
Bayala: Patyegarang’s Notebooks 7-29 January; 6am-11pm, Dawes Point – FREE
A sharing and celebration of the Indigenous heritage of Sydney and the growing movement to reawaken local language. Working with local Eora and Darug community leaders and language experts, classes, talks, an installation and a mass choral performance have been developed to celebrate the local language of the Sydney area.
House of Mirrors: 6-29 January; 4.30-11pm, Hyde Park North - $10
A fascinating labyrinth of endless mirrors, magnified to terrifying dimensions. Stumble your way around thousands of disorientating optical illusions and lose yourself in some bewildering reflections.
Symphony Under The Stars: 14 January; 8pm, The Domain – FREE
Classical music under the stars. Bring a hamper, a blanket and your friends, and settle in for a free concert with a repertoire including Adams, Mozart, Elgar and more.
Soul of Sydney: 8, 15, 22 & 29 January; 12-5pm, Hyde Park North – FREE
Each Sunday the Soul of Sydney DJs will unearth gems from afrobeat, New York disco, roller boogie, to early Chicago house and 90s hip-hop, while on the dance-floor the Soul Patrol’s infectious dance moves will have you up and moving.
Breaking Ground: 27 January; 2-5pm, Hyde Park North – FREE
A funk-filled afternoon for the whole family produced by B*boy Nick Power. Witness Australia’s best B*boys and B*girls battle it out with live performances from the cream of Sydney’s hip-hop talent alongside DJs spinning the freshest beats, from the old to the new.
Roller Jam: 7, 14, 21 & 28 January; From 2.30pm, Hyde Park North – FREE
Dust off your skates and glide, boogie and shake your way around the Archibald Fountain.

Australia Day: 26 January – Various events around Sydney’s CBD
Celebrate Australia Day with Sydney Festival. The world’s most beautiful harbour city will host another exciting Australia Day with events taking place on the water and across Sydney. There’s something for everyone!
Parramatta and Western Sydney
Circus – ID: 12-22 January, Riverside Theatre
A high-energy fusion of circus, acrobatics and urban dance from Cirque Éloize.
Kaleidoscope: 13-15, 17-18 January, Riverside Theatre
View life through Ethan’s eyes in a joyous, poetic circus experience that explores the great beauty found in the smallest things.
Flying Trapeze Workshops: 13-22 January (except Mondays), Prince Alfred Square, Parramatta
Sydneysiders are invited to take flight on a 10 metre high flying trapeze rig! This two hour workshop will include opportunities to practice tricks and conclude with students being caught by a catcher in mid-air.
Kaleidoscope Workshops: 14, 17 & 18 January, Riverside Theatre (10-16yrs)
Kaleidoscope turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. Participants will enjoy structured and creative play opportunities to discover their imaginative potential.
