Snow in NSW adds magic and wonder to winter. Whether it's face-planting in the fluffy white stuff to make snow angels, giggling through a snowball fight or sliding feet-first on a toboggan, snow is guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

While you might not be ready to turn the kids into professional skiers, there's nothing like the wonder of that first frolic in the snow. So here are some places in and around Sydney that are great for families wanting a white Christmas in July, be it real or fake!

The Best Places to See Snow Near Sydney

When Does it Snow in NSW?

This year, the NSW snow season opens on 10 June 2023. Usually, the Snowy Mountains and surrounding areas of Mt Kosciuszko National Park (just under six hour's drive from the city) will spoil you with a winter wonderland to rival the northern hemisphere. Thredbo has already reported snow a whopping two months before the season has even started, which, hopefully, means we're in for some serious snowfall in 2023!

Regional parts of the state, including the Blue Mountains, Orange and the Upper Hunter, can also experience snowfall.

Where is the Closest Snow to Sydney?

During the chilly months, you need not travel far to experience a white winter. The Blue Mountains region is around an hour west of Sydney and often experiences natural snowfall when the temperature drops.

For an alpine snowfield experience, you can get to Corin Forest in under four hours, where they use snow guns to maintain lush powdery conditions for the best snow play.

For the real deal, a five-and-a-half-hour road trip will get you to Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains, one of the best places for skiing in NSW.

There is an alternative if you're not quite kitted out to take the kids on a full-blown ski trip! We've rounded up three of the best places to see snow in and near Sydney.

1. Corin Forest

Corin Forest
Corin Forest is the closest snow to Sydney and a winter wonderland for kids.

One of our top picks for the perfect first snow experience is Corin Forest.

Through the wonders of technology, it is the closest snowfield to Sydney, where kids can frolic in the Snow Play area, get a ski or snowboard lesson at the Snow Sports School, go tobogganing and experience the 'magic carpet' ski lift.

This family-friendly snow park offers a fun range of winter experiences, including a 1.2km Alpine Slide through the gorgeous Mountain Ash forest. Corin Forest also has a cosy onsite cafe with a fireplace where you can warm up and roast marshmallows.

2. Blue Mountains Yulefest

Gorgeous fields of snow in Blackheath.

The Blue Mountains is the ultimate place to celebrate Christmas in July, and Yulefest will be there for three months of wintery fun.

From June to August, you can experience warm 'Mountains' hospitality, log fires, Christmas fare, singalongs, and perhaps even Santa. The community comes together to create a magical winter wonderland full of special events, activities and offers. We recommend the Friday and Saturday night festive dinners at the luxurious and family-friendly Fairmont Resort.

While we can’t guarantee snow in the Blue Mountains, it is known to happen, and you might get lucky! Witnessing snowfall against the backdrop of the stunning mountains is truly a sight to behold.

3. Snow Time in the Garden

Snow Time in the Garden, Hunter Valley
Hunter Valley's Snow Time in the Garden is an annual family favourite!

One of the coolest events on the winter calendar, Snow Time in the Garden is back at Hunter Valley Gardens in 2023.

With a Snow Cave, a giant Ice Skating Rink, a mega Ice Toboggan and a man-made Snow Play Zone, families will love chilling out in this massive icy wonderland with plenty of entertainment.

Hunter Valley Gardens have their own amusement park with rides, including the Ferris Wheel, Swing Chair, Venetian Carousel, and Tea Cups; plus, there will be warm beverages and hearty food from the Garden Terrace café and food stalls.

4. Oberon

The famous Winter Pines in Oberon.

The town of Oberon NSW is renowned for its sweeping deep green pine forests, which transform into the 'Winter Pines' come wintertime in NSW.

If you're happy to drive close to three hours to get to Oberon, you'll certainly be rewarded with a snow-filled wonderland. The area has been known to receive the first snow of the season in NSW, so it's a great spot to keep on your list of where to see snow near NSW.
